Nothing We Can Do About It

Is there anything that we could do to make our Father love us more…or less?
No. This is hard for us to accept. His love is so unconditional and without bounds; He loves completely, without reservations. Even with this love waiting for us, we feel like we have to do something to earn it. If that were the case, He wouldn’t be able to bestow mercy because mercy goes before any intention to offer forgiveness…for all who ask.

Our Father doesn’t love a murderer or conartist less than one whose sins are less severe. The love and mercy is still available. The difference is our hearts. We ‘feel’ or know His love at different capacities. Those of us who feel unloved or separated from Him probably feel so because we are angry with Him, think ourselves to be unlovable, or judge others harshly…either way, we are not allowing love to flow through us.

Why do we think we have to earn the Father’s love? This goes back to the beginning…as in “In the beginning, God created man and woman.” Because we read that God cast Adam and Eve out, we think that He doesn’t love those who sin. Since we are not perfect, why wouldn’t He do the same with us? However, if we were to really look at what happened, we would notice that it was they who rejected His love. They chose to be disobedient and selfish, which bears serious consequence, but not the removal of His love. Many may think that if God loved them, then He would’ve overlooked their sin and not punish them. That’s not love, though. What they did could not be undone because it was what they chose. He can’t give freedom and then take it back by undoing or putting the world back as if it didn’t happen. He cast them out of the Garden but not out of His sight or love. If He didn’t care, He wouldn’t have let them stay with the Devil and have no consequence, or way of learning from their sin.

I wonder if we sadden the Father by our poor choices. Do we make Him angry by the pain we cause each other? Since, He is love, more than likely. But, the truth remains that if He were to stop loving us, we would cease to exist. We don’t have to earn the Father’s love; we have to accept it and all that comes with it. We don’t have to be successful or produce good outcomes in our lives. Thinking that this would make us more loveable to Him is a human idea, and He doesn’t operate that way.
